What is a Logline?

LogLines site

A logline is a brief summary of a television program, film, or motion picture often providing both a synopsis of the program's plot, and an emotional "hook" to stimulate interest. Here are some examples ~

Gone Girl (2014)

With his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent.

 Divergent (2014)

In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she's Divergent and won't fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it's too late.

   Lucy (2014)

A woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

My own example of a logline could be...

Hunt (2014)

After having lost her family to a cold killer, a girl plans her smart, twisted revenge.

This logline works because it is an enigma. It suggests the plot is going to be clever and a real thriller, chase-like film. To many thriller fans the idea of a chase or pursue is often really exciting so it would attract Thriller audience's.
